What is CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive procedure that uses cooling energy to freeze and destroy fat cells. This safe treatment is proven to improve body image and remove stubborn fat deposits with no downtime.

Coolsculpting is an FDA approved device that alleviates unwanted fat cells through a process called cryolipolysis or fat cell death through freezing. This treatment was developed by two Harvard scientists who were researching how the cold affects our fat cells. Coolsculpting is the perfect treatment for someone with stubborn fat areas that will not seem to budge. With little to no downtime, CoolSculpting is the perfect way to eliminate your problem area without stopping your normal day to day activities. Coolsculpting has little to no visible signs of healing so this treatment can be as discrete as you would like.

How does CoolSculpting® Work?

The CoolSculpting® technology delivers cooling energy to the fat cells beneath the skin’s surface. This process freezes fat cells while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged and healthy. The frozen cells are then destroyed and flushed out by the body, leaving you with a more contoured figure. This process is not painful and can be used on almost any area of the body where sculpting is desired.

What is a CoolSculpting® Treatment Like?

CoolSculpting® procedures are safe and comfortable and require no anesthetics. It is common for patients to experience a cooling sensation from the applicator, but this sensation usually dissipates within a few minutes. You can expect the rest of the treatment, which lasts approximately half an hour, to be comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: Yes. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they do not return. However, each treatment removes about 20-25% of your fat cells so you will still have some remaining. Depending on the amount of fat cells and the results you want to achieve you may need more then one treatment.

A: Imagine that all your fat cells are little balloons all over your body. When you gain weight, they stretch larger and when you lose weight they shrink. When we coolsculpt you in an area we are removing a percentage of the balloons each treatment. If post treatment you gain a significant amount of weight that will be distributed to the remaining balloons in your body. That is one of the reasons I really like CoolSculpting because it helps to alleviate a trouble area and evenly distributes our fat.

A: One of the best things about CoolSculpting is for most patients the treatment itself has very little to no down time. Some patients experience numbness, soreness, tender skin or a bruise like feeling in the area. This is normally about a week or two. The fat can feel a bit swollen after or bloated in the abdomen. For most patients, the discomfort is minimal. Occasionally, we get a patient who has some lingering numbness for up to a month and some late on set pain. This is rare but can be treated with ibuprofen or Tylenol. Some patients feel compression garments can also help with discomfort the first few weeks but it not necessary. You can return to the gym directly post Coolsculpting!

A: Coolsculpting is a very tailored treatment and your results rely heavily on who is treating you. It is very important to do your research and I find a trusted and trained provider and have a consultation with them. Average patient is 2 treatments, but that number can go up or down depending on your size and desired end goal. We have seen many patients come in for consultations and they have read online that CoolSculpting does not work or someone they know was treated and had a bad experience. From everything that I have personally seen “unhappy” patients have normally been either under-treated, meaning they needed 2-3 sessions and only had 1 or they had incorrect applicator placement. Touching back on the importance of seeing a provider who is well trained and will treat to completion. During our consultations we really stress the importance of treating to your desired end goal versus a treatment plan that is quick and less expensive. It is worth it to save your money to be happy at the end of your treatment series.

A: A perfect candidate would be someone who lives a healthy and active lifestyle but has stubborn areas of fat that will not resolve. Coolsculpting is not a weight loss program. In fact, fat does not actually weigh that much so many people do not see a huge change in the scale as their body starts to change post treatment. We can treat clients who have larger amounts of fat, but they will require multiple sessions of treatment. We also need to ensure that patients have the correct type of fat. Coolsculpting works great on subcutaneous fat but does not work on visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat is squishy fat. The saying is “if you can squeeze it you can freeze it.” Visceral fat is deeper however and the type of fat that surrounds our organs. Imagine a hard Santa Claus belly, that is visceral fat. That type of fat can only be treated with diet and exercise.

A: Because CoolSculpting is more of a gradual transformation your skin has more time to retract back unlike with liposuction where the fat is taken away abruptly. Some of the CoolSculpting applicators are actually FDA approved to tighten the skin as well. Laxity post treatment also depends on the patient’s skin health and age. The younger our skin is the faster it snaps back. We also have devices here that solely treat skin laxity and can help the quality of your skin post treatment if desired.

A: While it takes three months to see full results, you will start to see some changes two to four weeks after treatment.

A: We are genetically predisposed to have more fat cells in certain areas of our body. These areas are known as “trouble areas” or pockets of subcutaneous fat. Coolsculpting helps to remove those stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

A: Coolsculpting helps to remove those stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Each treatment is design to address your specific concerns. Each coolsculpting treatment takes approximately one hour per area treated.

A: Coolsculpting treatments work by freezing fat cells in a targeted area. Your lymphatic system helps say bye bye to those fat cells by moving them out of your body. Drinking plenty of water, eating a good diet including fruits and vegetables and getting a sweat session in are good ways to support your lymphatic system.

A: Coolsculpting permanently reduces 20%- 25% of the fat located in the area treated. You are born with all the fat cells you will ever have, so this reduction is permanent.

A: If you gain weight after coolsculpting, the weight will evenly distribute to all areas of the body.

A: Coolsculpting is noninvasive, this means that you can get back to working out immediately. Keep in mind it is common for you to experience puffiness, tenderness and sometimes even bruising in the area.
