Smooth Wrinkles and Fine Lines with Botox® Cosmetic at North Sound Dermatology Aesthetics!

Botox® Cosmetic is one of the most popular injectable treatments available today with over 10 million vials sold in the United States alone since 2002. This product is FDA approved to improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet.

How Does Botox® Work?

Many wrinkles are the result of repeated muscle contractions, caused when people make facial expressions like smiling, squinting, laughing, and speaking. Botox® Cosmetic is formulated with botulinum toxin. When injected into the muscles of the face, it temporarily reduces their activity, smoothing the fine lines and wrinkles they cause. Because this muscle relaxation only lasts for three or four months, patients have to undergo periodic injections to maintain their results.

Is Botox® Safe?

Botox® Cosmetic is the most extensively studied aesthetic treatment available today. It has been the subject of over 400 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals. Because it has been so thoroughly studied, patients interested in Botox® Cosmetic can take comfort knowing they’re receiving an injectable that is both safe and effective. This product has also been approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries and has been used for the past 17 years to safely treat a broad range of medical conditions.

What Can Botox® be Used to Treat?

Botox® Cosmetic can be used to correct nearly any wrinkle caused by facial movement. This includes:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Vertical lip lines
  • Chin dimpling

What Can I Expect from Botox®?

Each Botox® Cosmetic injection usually takes less than 10 minutes to complete. If a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area before beginning injections, the entire duration of each session usually lasts about 30 minutes. Because of our topical numbing cream and the fine needles we use for injection, any discomfort felt is usually brief and easily managed.

Following injections, some patients may experience rashes, itching, neck or back pain, bruising, swelling, or muscle stiffness. Fortunately, these side effects usually fade within a few days of receiving treatment.

Botox® FAQs

What is Botox®?

Wrinkles and lines on the face are caused by the repeated muscular contractions involved in frowning, squinting, smiling and other types of facial expressions. Botox® Cosmetic is an agent that relaxes these muscles, thereby smoothing out the overlying lines and wrinkles.

What is the difference between Botox® and other brands like Dysport® ?

Botox® and Dysport® are all commercial formulations that are produced by different companies and all are approved by the FDA for moderate-to-severe frown lines. Each product is slightly different as far as the chemical make-up and packaging, but all three have the same active ingredient.

How long does it last?

The effects of Botox® usually last three to four months. After several treatments, the effects of Botox® Cosmetic may begin to last longer.

When will I see results from a Botox® treatment?

Within days you may see a marked improvement in the injected areas. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days, and results can last for up to four months.
Where can Botox® be used?
Botox® can be used for frown lines, the upper forehead, around the eyes for crow’s feet and for manipulating the shape and height of the brow and corners of the mouth.

How long will the treatment take?

After an initial consultation with the dermatologist, the treatment itself will only take about five minutes, depending on the size and number of areas to be treated. We can give you a topical numbing cream to reduce any discomfort associated with the injections, which needs to be applied 30 minutes prior to your appointment.

Does it hurt?

Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. We use the smallest needles available for the injections. Prior to injecting, the provider may choose to numb the area with a cold pack, ice or a topical numbing cream.

What are possible side effects?

Possible side effects are usually mild. These may include some redness, tenderness and bruising in the areas treated. Make-up can be used to cover any temporary discoloration. A droopy eyelid may also occur, but is very rare and can be resolved using a special eye drop.

What is the recovery time after treatment?

The treatment requires no downtime. Most people can return to their normal daily routines right away. We recommend that you do not schedule a Botox® appointment within two weeks of any special events, such as weddings, vacations or photography.

Is there anything I should avoid?

For 14 days prior to your appointment, we recommend that you do not use any blood-thinning medications, including aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen. This will help reduce your chances of bruising after treatment. Please do NOT stop any blood-thinning medications that have been prescribed to you by a doctor.

For the first 24 hours after treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, the consumption of alcoholic beverages, and the use of blood-thinning medications (unless recommended by your doctor). You should also avoid manipulating or sleeping on the treated area, as well as extended exposure to the sun, heat or freezing temperatures.
